Coffee Facts

-Although all coffees are unique, they can be grouped according to region: Central and South American coffees are classic, smooth, acidy, nippy and balanced; Indonesian coffees are sweet, mellow, aromatic, rounded, full bodied and earthy; and African coffees are flavourful, distinctive, winey and bright.

-The nutritional value of an 8 oz cup of coffee brewed with tap water (excluding cream & sugar) is:
     -water = 99.3%
     -calories = 2Kcal
     -caffeine = 85mg
     -protein = 0.1g
     -carbohydrate = 0.4g
     -ash = 0.1g
     -calcium = 2mg
     -phosphorus = 1mg
     -iron = 0.1mg
     -sodium = 2mg
     -potassium = 54mg
     -niacin = 0.22mg

-When coffee is slurped, it volatilizes (turns the liquid into vapours) which helps you taste it better.

-1 acre of coffee trees can produce up to 10,000 lbs of coffee cherries.  After hulling or milling this amount to approximately 2,000 lbs of beans.

-We call them coffee beans but they are actually berries.

-No coffee is grown in the United States or its territories, with the exception of Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

-"Cowboy coffee" was said to be made by putting ground coffee into a clean sock and submerging it in cold water over a campfire.Italians drink their espresso with sugar, German and Swiss with equal parts hot chocolate, Mexicans with cinnamon, and the Belgians with chocolate.

-Moroccans drink their coffee with peppercorns, Ethiopians with a pinch of salt.  Coffee drinkers in the Middle East usually add cardamom and spices, and whipped cream is the favourite of Austrians.

-In Greece and Turkey, it is the custom that the eldest be served coffee first.

-Beethoven who was a coffee lover, was so particular about his coffee that he always counted 60 beans for each cup when he prepared his brew.

-The first coffee advertisement read "The virtue of the coffee drink first publicly made and sold in England, by Pasqua Rosee... in St. Michael's Alley Cornhill... at the Signe of his own head."  It was in the form of a handbill and distributed in 1651.  It is now housed in the British Museum.

-The Americans, the French and the Germans consume 65% of the world's total coffee consumption.

-In 1785, in Prussia, the coffee revolt broke out because coffee was restricted to the nobility, the clergy and the high officials.

-When coffee supplies became scarce during the American Civil War, soldiers who were desperate for a cup of coffee, used roasted sweet potato and Indian corn as a substitute.

-The word "tip" dates back to the old London coffee houses.  Brass boxes etched with the words "To Insure Promptness" were placed amongst the coffeehouse to encourage customers to pay for efficient service.  Resulting in the popular acronym TIP of today.

-2.4 billion lbs of coffee are sold per year in the United States.

-The faster the brewing method, the finer the coffee should be ground.

-57% of all coffee is consumed at breakfast.

-The average American adult consumes 10 lbs of coffee per year.
